“An exciting game between two good teams!"

Hear from head coach Julian Nagelsmann, sporting director Markus Krösche, goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi and defenders Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg after the 2-2 draw against VfL Wolfsburg

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann:

“It was an exciting game between two good teams. Both teams threw everything at it going forward. The draw is a fair result. We we closer to winning it at the end and were the better team, especially in the second half. There was a clear, visible improvement in the performance. We had a few huge chances that we absolutely had to take. Not enough end product, but our opponents were also really good today. We have to live with the point.

We started really strongly but we then fell away hard. In the second half we played with great quality and mentality, which allowed us to create clear-cut chances. Three points would have been great – but Dortmund and Leverkusen will be saying that this weekend too. Wolfsburg are really strong opponents who are mixing it at the top of the table. There are a lot of good teams in the Bundesliga right now. On Wednesday we want to push to our limit again.”

Péter Gulácsi:

“We were a little sloppy in our build-up play today and we made too many passing errors in the final third. By doing that we played right into their hands and let Wolfsburg establish themselves. Our performance in the second half was then really good and we deservedly scored the equaliser. In the end we were close to winning and we had three massive chances.
We have been really successful in weeks gone by and we won a lot of games. Now we haven’t been good enough in the second half against Dortmund or for 30 minutes here against Wolfsburg today. We simply didn’t play our best. We can’t allow that to happen in the Bundesliga, especially if you want to be at the top, but there’s no shame in a draw against Wolfsburg. We have to keep going and keep working hard. On Wednesday we are facing Union Berlin, a team on a superb run of form. We want to take three points no matter what.”

Lukas Klostermann:

“We deserved two more points than we got today. Wolfsburg made life difficult for us in the first half but we created so much in the second half that it's ultimately two points lost rather than one point gained. Naturally, it was annoying that we conceded two goals in the first half but I thought that we reacted well after that. We didn't let the deficit affect us and went on to create more chances. We all want to pick up points and you could see that at the end of the game. Unfortunately we didn't give it enough today, but with this attitude we will win the next few games.”

Marcel Halstenberg:

“We have to take the point, but I think we had enough chances in the second half to get a third goal. Wolfsburg are far from a bad team, of course. After going a goal down we didn't respond well, but we came back after the interval and won a lot of duels and created a lot of chances. We just lacked a little bit of coolness in front of goal."

Sporting director Markus Krösche:

“I thought we started the first half really well but after the first goal we took our foot off the gas a bit, which ultimately caused us to fall behind. We played well in the second half and had a number of chances to score, but we should have made more of them. In my opinion a win for us would have been thoroughly deserved. The draw is annoying for us now but Wolfsburg are a really strong team and I think we can be satisfied with the way that we played in the second half.”
