2-2 draw away at VfL Wolfsburg

RB Leipzig share the points with VfL Wolfsburg in energetic game | Mukiele with an early opener (5') | Orban equalises after Wolfsburg goals from Weghorst and Steffen (54')

Points shared with Wolfsburg! RB Leipzig drew 2-2 with VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 16 of the Bundesliga season and take one point from an intense match-up.
Leipzig started the game perfectly and took the lead with their first chance in the 5th minute through Nordi Mukiele – the full back’s first goal of the new year. However, the hosts came into the game and equalised theough Wout Weghorst after some impressive build-up play. VfL remained the team in control and took the lead thanks to Renato Steffen’s deflected shot (35’).

At the break, head coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced Christopher Nkunku into the game, who made his return from injury. The change paid off, with Nkunku supplying Amadou Haidara from a set piece. Haidara’s effort was seen late by goalkeeper Koen Casteels, who was only able to parry into the path of Willi Orban. The defender reacted quickest to put the ball over the line (54').

Both sides fought for the win until the end of the game and despite chances at each end, the scores remained even and the points were shared.





6th minute: Wolfsburg try to reply through Wout Weghorst, but the goal doesn’t stand due to a handball before the shot. VAR confirms the referee Tobias Stieler’s decision.

22nd minute: The home side level the game. After some impressive play, Yannick Gerhardt plays Weghorst in who heads past Péter Gulácsi.
27th minute: Dani Olmo sets up Haidara and the midfielder is through, but a strong last-minute challenge from Maxence Lacroix deflects the ball behind.

35th minute: Wolfsburg take the lead. Renato Steffen has a go from outside the area. The shot deflects off Willi Orban and leaves Gulácsi with no chance, creeping inside the far post..


38th minute: Forsberg’s cross is met with a strong header by Upamecano, but Wolfsburg’s Casteels pulls off a good save.

46th minute: Christopher Nkunku makes his return from an ankle injury as a half-time substitute. Nice to have you back, Christo!

54th minute: RBL are level! Nkunku delivers the ball in and Haidara attempts an effort on goal. Casteels sees the ball late and is able to parry but doesn't clear the danger. Willi Orban shows a striker's instinct and is first to the loose ball to fire home!


69th minute: A good counter attack from RBL results in an effort from Angeliño which is well blocked. The boys are doing well and are hunting the victory!
84th minute: Angeliño fires one goalwards from a narrow angle, and substitute Justin Kluivert can’t quite get there.
