"It was important to start with a win!"

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, defensive stalwart Willi Orban and match winner Dani Olmo discuss the 1-0 win away to Stuttgart.

Julian Nagelsmann:

  •   "I am really satisfied with this match. We settled in well right from the first minute and kept improving throughout the whole first half. We were really strong in the first 30 minutes after the break. Obviously we should have scored a second and third goal, but you also have to compliment Stuttgart’s Gregor Kobel, who had an unbelievable game today.

Our boys wore their heart on their sleeve today, though, and they deserved to win. The winning goal was superbly crafted. That’s exactly how we wanted to play against a Stuttgart team that defended deep today.

On our side, I want to give a special mention to Péter Gulácsi, who picked up another clean sheet and pulled off a terrific save just before the end. At times like that, you can tell how important he is for the team with all of his experience.”

Willi Orban:

  • "All in all it’s a completely deserved win today. In the first half things were already going really well, but at half-time we discussed and changed a few things that we could do even better in the second 45. We were really dominant and created lots of chances for ourselves. We obviously had to do better at converting them, though.
It was still close and tense at the end, which was unnecessary really. Pete Gulácsi had to make a good save. Overall I like the way that we’re playing at the moment. There is a great stability to our play right now and so we can look forward to the weeks and fixtures to come.”

Dani Olmo:

  • "We are obviously really happy with the win. It was important to start the new year successfully and I am happy that I was able to help the team with my goal. We used our pressing game better in the second half, which helped us to create more chances and score the deserved goal.

I have a really good understanding with Angelino, and that showed for my goal. We have already played together for the national team and he is a fantastic player. He has already shown that on plenty of occasions during his time at RB Leipzig. He knows where I will be on the pitch and his cross was just perfect.”
