"For the city and for the fans"

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, Emil Forsberg, Péter Gulácsi, Oliver Minztlaff and Marcel Sabitzer speak after the DFB-Pokal semi-final win against SV Werder Bremen

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "In the end, the best wins are the ones from close games. It was very emotional, which allows you to dig even deeper. The lads fought hard and gave it everything. We have a turbulent week behind us, but as every could see tonight, it didn't affect us. The lads have their hearts in the right place and deservedly won. It was close: Bremen did a great job by not allowing us much space and forcing us to retreat and defend. That didn't make it easy for us. In the end, we deservedly won but it also took a bit of luck in the end.

With his goal and the assist, which really wasn't easy to deliver, Hee-chan Hwang did a very good job tonight. It was a great game from him. I also told Emil Forsberg before subbing him on that he wasn't just going on to help us in the event of a shootout.

I would really like to say goodbye with a title. We're hoping that we play well in the final and seeing how hard the lads fought for both myself and the coaching staff after such a turbulent week was really great."

Emil Forsberg:

  • "I was only on the pitch for five minutes, which was enough for me to score. It was a really nice goal, that's exactly how we want to play and get behind the opponent's backline. We really wanted to reach the final and we've achieved that. We're very happy and proud of that.

Every player wants to play all the time, but the plan worked well tonight and we've advanced, which is the most important thing. I'm happy that I was able to help out the team. We've advanced, which isn't just important for us, but for the fans as well. Many of our players have never been in the final, so that was another little gift from me. We will have to give it our all in the final, as we really want to win. We're fighting for our coach, we're fighting for the team, for the city and for the fans."

 Péter Gulácsi:

  • "As a team, we really wanted to advance to the final and we managed to do that. We want to win our first trophy, which would also be a nice farewell for the coach. Julian is a great coach, but that's how it is in football, coaches come and go. Of course we want to crown this season with a trophy, and bring a great season to an end by winning the final. We've come close in the past years, in the league as well. That's why it would be nice to win our first trophy.

Werder did well for much of the game, they made things hard for us and played several long balls. We defended those well for the most part, but it's always possible that there are some that slip through."

Oliver Mintzlaff:

  • "Of course it's fantastic as we really wanted to reach the final, but I never thought that it would be such a thrilling fight to the end. Nevertheless, we're deservedly through to the final and are one step closer to completing a fantastic season.

We played great for the first 20 minutes and were really pushing for a goal, but then we lost control a bit. We lacked some luck up until we scored, and after that we were rewarded. I'm very happy and extremely proud about tonight's performance and that we've reached the final."
