"We're proud."

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer react to the home game against VfL Wolfsburg

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "The first half was difficult. The players were still sore from the cup final and we weren't on the same level mentally as VfL Wolfsburg. They pressed well and we made too many mistakes in our build-up play. Despite having good chances, we deserved to be behind, but we should have equalised straight afterwards. Conceding the second goal just before half time is frustrating.

However, I'm pleased with the way the boys came out for the second half. We played good football from the start and were able to increase our pressure. We didn't let Wolfsburg come out of their own half anymore. Based on that, we deserved the equaliser and we worked hard for it.
All in all, the draw is fine. Today we saw two completely different halves, and it wasn't just two teams passing it around at the end. Each side wanted to win, you could see that. We are happy to have picked up the point and to have secured second place!"

Emil Forsberg:

  • "After the cup final, securing second place was one of our aims. Now we want to record the best season in the club's history, but of course we're really proud. A complement to the team for the second half, we came back really strongly. That shows our passion and mentality, because coming back against a team like Wolfsburg is not easy.
Wolfsburg scored a really nice goal in the first half, after that we also had chances of our own and I don't think we played badly. However, when you're down 2-0 at halftime, of course you're not pleased. In the second half we did everything right and came back. In the end, the 2-2 was deserved.
I extended my contract in Leipzig because I love the city and the club with its fans. It was a very easy decision for me to extend because I have everything I need here. We are a top club, are always in European competition and I feel really comfortable here. My family and I have been living here for six years and don't want to leave."

 Marcel Sabitzer:

  • "To be 2-0 down at half time doesn't look very good, but you have to look at the run of the game. We conceded a fantastic goal to go behind. Today's game actually had a lot of similarities to the cup final in Berlin. In the second half, we showed fight, threw everything in and earned the point. That was important.
It took a day or two after the defeat. However, we were well prepared today and focussed on securing second place. We've done that with the point. I'm proud of it, but don't really feel like celebrating it. I think that is understandable."
