Both teams saw an open game from the first minute. The visitors from Wolfsburg however created the better chances earlier on and were rewarded with the lead after Maximilian Philipp volleyed in impressively from the edge of the area (12'). After falling behind, the Red Bulls came more and more into the game but were unable to convert their chances into goals. Contrastingly, on the stroke of half time, it was the visitors who struck again, with Philipp getting ahead of Konaté to poke home his second of the game (45').
The second half was controlled by Leipzig. Justin Kluivert scored the first after some impressive individual word (51'), before captain Marcel Sabitzer converted from the penalty spot to deservedly equalise the game (71'). With no more goals at either end, the two sides were handed a point each at the end of what was a hard-fought game.
