"We wanted to show a reaction"

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, Emil Forsberg, Péter Gulácsi and Kevin Kampl on the win over VfB Stuttgart

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "Of course, it's hard to create fireworks when the opponent is so deep. We scored a very nice goal to make it 1-0 with our first attack after the break, but it was a game where we could have scored four or five goals. I think we deserved to win in the end. On Friday, the result is more important. Today, what was more important was that we put in a good performance.

We'd trained and discussed taking our chances before the game. In training, every player should be able to shoot in situations like they would in the game. Today we had eleven to twelve shots. Gregor Kobel had a great game and produced saves that not every goalkeeper can."

I took Ibrahima Konaté off because he picked up a yellow card. For me, the risk was too large that we would lose the player advantage that we had. So I didn't want to take any risks."

Emil Forsberg:

  • "We wanted to show a reaction after the last game. We did exactly that. Of course, the red card helped us. At halftime, we planned to cross more often; that worked well for the first goal - which was a really nice goal by Amadou Haidara.

It was important for us to get the early goal after the break to bring some control to the game. We worked on finishing in training. The goals don't always have to be beautiful. It was important to get two today and build self-confidence.

For me, it was a clear penalty. I really wanted to take it myself, because Gregor Kobel saved my penalty in the reverse fixture."

 Péter Gulácsi:

  • "We've dropped a few points recently, so the win today was important. We needed the win to secure 2nd place and Champions League qualification.

To have kept 15 clean sheets in the league is down to the whole team. It wasn't an easy game against Stuttgart today, but we remained focused. I hope we continue like that on Friday in Bremen, because we're still to concede a goal in the cup. We want it to stay that way, and then hopefully we'll make it to the final."

 Kevin Kampl:

  • "Today's 2-0 win is the right result and is a deserved victory for us. We came out of the break superbly and put into practice everything that we had discussed at half time. That's how the goal came about. We wanted to hit more crosses from the half-field, keep the opponent busy and continued to press after the goal and kept our feet on the gas.

The game today was important. A loss would have put ourselves in an uncomfortable position in the league. We didn't want that. We're having a fantastic season and it would be a shame not to reward ourselves for the effort we've put in. That's why the win today was very important and simply put, the boys have done well.

It gives you additional confidence when looking ahead to the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal and we can go into the game with confidence. But we know that anything can happen in the cup. We will be brave and can hopefully reach final on Friday!"
