“The boys have an unbelievable mentality!”

Julian Nagelsmann, Willi Orban, Angelino and Marcel Sabitzer speak to the media after a 3-2 win against Manchester United secures RBL’s place in the Champions League round of 16

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • “I’ve so proud of the lads! The team implemented our ideas brilliantly and fought until the last second. Like I said before the game – my players are machines. We were particularly good in the first half and even had a chance to score a third after the early goals; unfortunately we weren’t able to take it.

Both goals we conceded were a little unlucky, but we have to defend better in the build-up. It was an intense end to the game, but we’ve shown in recent weeks that we can over the line when it gets tight at the end. The boys have an unbelievable mentality, they believe in themselves and they just keep going. These experiences give us extra impetus in this busy period.

We fully deserve to progress to the knock-outs, and that’s in a difficult group with three top opponents. You really don’t take that for granted as a young club like RB Leipzig. We’ll celebrate a little today, and then the focus turns to Bremen.”

Willi Orban:

  • “All in all, it was a more than deserved victory for us. We started the game well and found space that we could attack. We should’ve even scored more goals in the first half. We didn’t, so it got a little nervy at the end. We couldn’t have worked harder in defence and, although there were a couple of unlucky fouls, we pulled it off.

We’re so proud that we’re in the knock-outs again. We’ve proved that last year wasn’t a one-off – and in a strong group too. We’re a young team that still has things to learn in certain situations, but we’re making great progress together and it’s just great to have made it to the round of 16.”

Marcel Sabitzer:

  • “If you look at the first 60 minutes, we’re deserved winners. Even if it got close towards the end. We could hardly have played better at the start of the game – the first 20 minutes were as good as it gets. We moved the ball, switched the play, found space and scored great goals. Hats off to the team!
We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to get out of such a difficult group. The end of the game was unnecessary, but we had to deal with it. We had to fight, win the second balls and try to relieve some of the pressure with attacks of our own.

We’ve matured as a side and we don’t hide anymore. We’re composed on the ball even against top sides. There’s a continual development in the side and the boss is doing a good job.”

  • “I’m so proud of the team. We’ve showed that we can win against really good teams. Winning against Manchester United just feels great. It was an unbelievably hard game, a really tough match. But now it feels incredibly good. We didn’t need to make it hard work towards the end, and Péter Gulácsi had to make some really good saves. He saved us really.
Marcel Sabitzer’s assist for my goal was brilliant and obviously well-rehearsed too. Then I struck it really well thankfully. We take one game at a time and now we need to concentrate on the weekend.”
