Home victory in the opening game! Die Roten Bullen won their season opener with a 3-1 scoreline over 1. FSV Mainz 05.
After the game, head coach Julian Nagelsmann as well as Yussi Poulsen spoke about the opening day along with the feeling of having fans back in the stadium.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann:
- "We had a lot of great players on the pitch. Dani and Emil are fantastic players who like to have the ball at their feet. They played superbly together. That is a great achievement against a defence which was sitting deep.
On the opening day, it's all about starting the season well. It is important to take the first step towards our goals and show that we're ready for what is probobaly going to be an intense season. That we can start the season well after a strange pre-season. We wanted to be 100% there from the first minute. It was hard to top the mentality that we showed in the first half.
If we'd have taken all of our chances, it could have been seven or eight. We have a very tough opposition in Leverkusen next weekend, so we will have to be even better."
Yussuf Poulsen:
- "We're pleased to start the season with a comfortable victory. At times we lacked concentration when finishing our chance, but we're very pelased to have created so many scoring opportunities. Next week, we'll be even more efficient.
Despite the short pr-season, we're doing well. However, we lacked a bit of energy towards the end of the game and our play became a little bit sloppy. In possession we could have made better decisions, but that will come with time.
The atmospherer with fans was amazing, it was really loud in the stadium."
Emil Forsberg:
- "I'm in good form and wanted to help the team. My goal was a reaction to the atmosphere in the ground. We wanted to put on a good show for the fans - it was amazing to be able to play in front of supporters again.
To beat the best teams, you have to give 100%. If we show the same levels of motivation that we did today, we'll be able to compete at the top end of the table."
Tyler Adams:
- "We are really pleased with the performance today. It would have been better with a clean sheet.
It was definitely a lift to have fans back in the stadium. It was a great feeling!
I'm pleased for Hee-Chan Hwang and Benny Henrichs who could make their Bundesliga debuts for us today!"
