Comfortable opening-day victory! RB Leipzig defeat Mainz 3-1

Forsberg (17'), Poulsen (21') and Haidara (51') on the scoresheet for die Roten Bullen | 8,500 fans under special hygiene conditions in the Red Bull Arena

A great start to the season! A convincing performance from RB Leipzig was more than enoug to secure a 3-1 home victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05 to kick off the new Bundesliga season. 8,500 supporters were allowed into the ground to see the game, and followed all regulation and protocol, and also created a great atmosphere in the Red Bull Arena. 

The team left no doubt of their intentions to win the game from the very first minute, and impressed with some good interplay. In the 17th minute Dani Olmo was fouled inside the penalty area, and Emil Forsberg converted the resulting spot kick into the bottom right corner. Four minutes later, Olmo was involved again. Yussuf Poulsen headed in his cross with a looping effort over the goalkeeper and into the far post to double the lead (21'). The boys did not let up and came close to the third goal, with Emil Forsberg being denied by the post (31').

Mainz got a goal back shortly after half time with their first chance of the game when Jean-Philippe Mateta latched onto a great pss from Robin Quaison and found the net (48'). But just three minutes later, the two-goal lead was restored thanks to Amadou Haidara, who was provided by Forsberg and finished past the goalkeeper (51'). Leipzig continued to control the game and enjoyed more chances to increase the lead, but were unable to convert.

21st minute: GOOAAL for die Roten Bullen! A wide free kick was taken by Forsberg and is cleared by Mainz. Olmo recovers possession and finds Yussi Poulsen, who loops a header over Zentner. 2-0 to RBL!

31st minute: Emil Forsberg does brilliantly to beat men in the area and his effort beats the goalkeeper... but hits the post! Almost 3-0!

45th minute: Amadou Haidara finds Angelino with a great pass, but the fullback can only find the side netting. Doudou then surges into the penalty area and tries to find a teammate, but Mainz' St. Juste is able to clear.

47th minute: Quiason finds Mateta with a brilliant pass, and the striker finds himself one-on-one with Péter Gulácsi and finished into the left corner. 2-1!

51th minute: GOOOALL for Leipzig! Yussi Poulsen lets a pass run from the left and Emil Forsberg beats three players, with a bit of luck, and finds himself in the six-yard box. Falling, he sqaures the ball to Haidara who finishes past Zentner. 3-1!

64th minute: Yussuf Poulsen almost doubles his tally! He blocks a ball from St. Juste and rouds the goalkeeper. His effort is on target along the floor, but Niakhate is there to clear off the line at the last second.

75th minute: Hee-chan Hwang makes his Bundesliga debut as a 69th minute substitute, replacing Dani Olmo. Our new signing almost has an instant impact and gets to the byline, but his cutback to Angelino does not find its target.

90th minute: fantastic support - thank you to the 8,500 fans in attendance, who created a brilliant atmosphere and followed all measures fantastically.
