A great start to the season! A convincing performance from RB Leipzig was more than enoug to secure a 3-1 home victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05 to kick off the new Bundesliga season. 8,500 supporters were allowed into the ground to see the game, and followed all regulation and protocol, and also created a great atmosphere in the Red Bull Arena.
The team left no doubt of their intentions to win the game from the very first minute, and impressed with some good interplay. In the 17th minute Dani Olmo was fouled inside the penalty area, and Emil Forsberg converted the resulting spot kick into the bottom right corner. Four minutes later, Olmo was involved again. Yussuf Poulsen headed in his cross with a looping effort over the goalkeeper and into the far post to double the lead (21'). The boys did not let up and came close to the third goal, with Emil Forsberg being denied by the post (31').
Mainz got a goal back shortly after half time with their first chance of the game when Jean-Philippe Mateta latched onto a great pss from Robin Quaison and found the net (48'). But just three minutes later, the two-goal lead was restored thanks to Amadou Haidara, who was provided by Forsberg and finished past the goalkeeper (51'). Leipzig continued to control the game and enjoyed more chances to increase the lead, but were unable to convert.
