"We weren't two goals worse"

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, captain Marcel Sabitzer, Kevin Kampl and Péter Gulácsi react to the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "We played a great game in the second half and created a lot of chances. Of course, we made two big mistakes, which get punished at this level. What's worse is that we didn't make the most of our chances - we have to put more emphasis on that than the two mistakes. Mistakes are a part of the game and unfortunately they happen in this sport. Overall, though, it was still a good game from us. We weren't two goals worse than Liverpool.

But we'll have to make up for those two goals in the second leg to get at least to extra time. We'll take it as 0-0 again and we want to try and take one or two chances. We can't afford to make any more mistakes.

We've earned the respect of Liverpool today. Their two goals were nothing outstanding. We brought them on ourselves."

Marcel Sabitzer:

  •  "Of course, we're very disappointed with the defeat. For long stretches of the game, we put in a decent performance and had two or three good opportunities. Unfortunately, we started the second half with two individual mistakes, which is very frustrating and tough to take. We won’t pin the game down to those mistakes. We will pick up where we left off: applying a lot of pressure and making good attacking moves. We still have a chance to qualify.

We want to cut out the mistakes in the second leg and make better use of our chances. Scoring a goal would have made it easier for ourselves; it's hard like this, but we have the belief that we can advance because we know the quality that we possess."

Kevin Kampl:

  • "We made two individual mistakes today that were punished. We can't let that happen - we know that. Overall, though, I think we played a good game and had enough chances to score one or two goals. Unfortunately, we didn't manage it today - of course, we want to make up for that in the second leg.

We have a lot of games at the moment and we have to recover well. We are still in all three competitions. Of course, it will be a difficult game at Anfield, but nothing is impossible and we'll give it all we've got to advance.

For now, though, the focus is back on the Bundesliga and Hertha BSC. We have to be in top shape for Sunday's game."

Péter Gulácsi:

  • "We started the game very well and had the chance to take the lead early on. We knew beforehand that we'd be facing a team with incredible quality today that would punish any mistakes we made.

In the first half it was an even game, then in the second everything went against us within ten minutes. Unfortunately, those two goals turned the game completely in the wrong direction. We have to take the blame. That's how football can be sometimes. However, the last half hour should give us confidence for the second leg. We had some good chances that would have brought us back into the game.

We want to get the first goal in the second leg and fight our way back."
