"A tough defeat"

Oliver Mintzlaff, Julian Nagelsmann and Yussuf Poulsen react to the DFB Pokal final defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Oliver Mintzlaff:

  • "Congratulations to Dortmund on the deserved victory. I can't make any criticism of the team. We conceded three goals in the first half from three individual mistakes, but still came back well and dominated the game in the second half but lacked the necessary luck. I can't blame the team, but in the end we're 4-1 losers, and that's tough to take.
We came here to get the win because we finally wanted to lift our first trophy and we've come away with our second cup final loss in three years. The team came out well for the second half and showed mentality. We tried everything and of course, it's bitter."

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "First of all, congratulations to Dortmund for the win. It never feels good when you lose a final. However, I'm proud of the team, because overall we performed well, even though the result doesn't look good. To come out and play such a good second half after being 3-0 down at halftime, and show so much heart, is fantastic. I don't think we were the worse team today, but when you're 3-0 down at the break, it's a big task. Dortmund sat very deep after their lead and looked to counterattack. Being behind didn't make it any easier for us in a final like that.
We could have threatened the opposition goal more. We had a lot of good chances that were good enough for us to score more. I have any bad feelings. We'll accept it, analyse it and prepare for the league game against Wolfsburg, but of course it's not that easy."

Yussuf Poulsen:

  • "Dortmund scored three goals from what felt like two chances in the first half, but that's just how it was. We simply didn't defend well enough in the decisive moments, but you also have to acknowledge that Dortmund have some very good players.
I think we threw it all in in the second half, but unfortunately didn't come manage the comeback. We missed a lot of good chances in the second half, but when you're down 3-0 at the break, it's always really hard. Then you have to throw everything in, and that's what we did. I think today was the best half we've played in a long time, but in the end we lacked the decisive goals and the small details."

 Marcel Sabitzer:

  • "Of course, it feels really bad so soon after the game, but I don't know if we were really three goals worse. If you allow the opponent to counter so often, it will get difficult at some point. We had more possession, but we weren't decisive enough in the final third and that's how you lose a game like that. Dortmund let us have that possession, but they have 3 or 4 players who transition quickly and they took advantage of that. We gave them too much space and we have to blame ourselves for that. I'm full of disappointment right now and if I had the chance, I'd play the whole 90 minutes again, that's certain."
