Opponent analysis: PSG

We take a closer look at upcoming opponents Paris Saint-Germain | Read about their season so far, key players and plenty more

A tough assignment on matchday three! Last year’s Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain visit Leipzig on Wednesday (kick-off at 21.00 CET). PSG are level on points with RB Leipzig with one win and one draw from their two matches so far. Wednesday’s match could therefore be decisive as the group stage reaches the halfway point.

We put Paris Saint-Germain under the microscope with our opponent analysis.

PSG reached the final of the UEFA Champions League last season. Thomas Tuchel’s team also lifted the Ligue 1 trophy and added further titles in the cup, league cup and supercup.

Paris Saint-Germain currently lead the way in the French Ligue 1. The team is unbeaten in seven domestic matches and has tasted defeat just twice so far this season. Last time out, the Parisians flexed their muscles with a 3-0 win over Nantes, despite being without their star forward Neymar.

Thomas Tuchel’s side overtook RB Leipzig in Group H of the UEFA Champions League last week. A 2-0 win away to Istanbul Başakşehir moved them up into second place thanks to their superior goal difference compared to that of RBL. Manchester United currently top the group.

We are Leipzig!

Key players:

Thomas Tuchel’s squad is missing several players right now, including some of their biggest names. Julian Draxler and Neymar are missing with thigh injuries, while defender Juan Bernat (ruptured cruciate ligament), midfielders Marco Veratti (hamstring injury) and Leandro Paredes, and striker Mauro Icardi are also out.

Other players will therefore be thrust into the limelight as the squad is rotated. Striker Moise Kean arrived on loan from Everton for the season and scored a brace in the match against Istanbul Başakşehir to fire his side to a 2-0 victory. Winger Ángel Di María is available again after completing his suspension.

Kylian Mbappé was a world champion at just 19 (2018). He already has seven league goals and two Champions League goals this season.
Captain Marquinhos has been at PSG since 2013 and has already scored in the league this season.
Ángel Di María was named "Man of the Match" in the UCL semi-final against RB Leipzig last season, with two assists and a goal.

The head coach:

Thomas Tuchel has successfully led the reigning French champions to back-to-back league titles in his two years in charge. Last season, he lifted the French league title as well as the cup, league cup and supercup.

Tuchel has faced die Roten Bullen just three times as a coach; twice with Borussia Dortmund (one win, one defeat) and once in last season’s Champions League semi-final with PSG.
