"We are very disappointed with the defeat"

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, captain Marcel Sabitzer, goalscorer Marcel Halstenberg and Willi Orban react to the tough 3-2 loss to Mainz 05

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "Of course, the defeat is disappointing. We knew ahead of the game that it would be hard to play football with the condition of the pitch, but we did really well in the first half. We had three or four chances early in the game that we could have taken more from. In the end, we have to do better from the set pieces. If we did so, we'd have gone into halAnschließend müssen wir die Standardsituation viel besser verteidigen. So wären wir mit einer 2:0-Führung in die Halbzeit gegangen.

It was a similar picture in the second half. We started well and had the control but conceded an unnecessary goal. After that, despite the changes, we found it hard to get back into the game."

Marcel Sabitzer:

  • "We were actually okay in the first half especially given that the pitch didn't allow a passing game. However, we didn't defend the two set pieces. After half time, we lacked consistency and you can't win games like that. Now we have to make sure that we return to picking up points next week."

Marcel Halstenberg:

  • "We took the lead twice today and conceded directly after each time - that was decisive. We actually came out of the break quite well, but let ourselves get caught off guard with their third goal and of course, it became really tough after that. Then we didn't get near enough to their goal to get the equaliser."

Willi Orban:

  • "We didn't defend the set pieces well and were a bit absent. Especially in the first half at the two set pieces, where we usually have a clear plan, we were lacking the right attitude. We weren't focused enough in the decisive moments and we need to be critical of ourselves for that.

We didn't carry on playing well in the second half and ended up losing our way. We didn't have enough patience and didn't switch the play enough. It will go down as a deserved loss.

We wanted to win the first game of the Rückrunde. We didn't manage that. Now we have to make sure we learn from the game in order to do better in the upcoming games."
