Pivotal goals

Important goals are something of a trademark for the Swede, as he demonstrated again most recently with his strike in the last minute of extra time against Werder Bremen, which took Leipzig into the 2021 DFB-Pokal final. Other important Forsberg goals include:

  • The first in a 2-0 win over Karlsruher SC in May 2016, which confirmed promotion to the Bundesliga
  • RB Leipzig's first ever goal in the UEFA Champions League. Forsberg scored first in a 1-1 draw with AS Monaco in September 2017.
  • The winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Zorya Lugansk in August 2018, which confirmed qualification for the UEFA Europa League group stage
  • Both goals in a 2-2 draw with Benfica in November 2019 which took RBL through the the Champions League knockout stages.
  • The winning goal against PSG in November 2020 (2-1).

RBL stats

Emil Forsberg:

  • "When I first came to Leipzig more than six years ago, it was a very big step for me. I was 23 years young and it was my first move abroad. So much has happened since then it's incredible. After a tough first six months I was able to properly find my feet and we've all gone on to achieve big things. Promotion to the Bundesliga, Champions League qualification and now our second DFB-Pokal final. I've had an amazing time here and I want more years like this at RB Leipzig. It's a fantastic club and I am excited for the years to come.

For me and my family, Leipzig has become our home. We are unbelievably happy here in this awesome city. I also felt the incredible support of our fans from day one, even through times where things weren't going so well on the pitch. That was, and still is, very important to me. So I hope we can reward our fans with the club's first major trophy on Thursday night - they deserve it more than anyone!"

Florian Scholz,
commercial sporting director and CMO:

  • "We are delighted about the early extension of Emil's contract until 2025 and the planning security it gives RB Leipzig. Emil has been on our journey with us since 2015 and has played a huge role in us establishing ourselves as one of the top teams in the Bundesliga. Emil has become a fan favourite here thanks to his footballing abilities and his cool character. He is also an important leader in the team and commands the respect of everyone at the club. We are excited to continue working with him next season and are pleased that he shares our hunger for more success."

Christopher Vivell,
technical director:

  • "Emil has continued to grow along with RB Leipzig since 2015 and has developed his outstanding skills year in year out. As an intelligent pass master with an exceptional shooting technique that makes him a constant danger in front of goal, he is one of the best attacking players in the Bundesliga. In addition to that, he is our unofficial man for the big moments and his personality has earned him the admiration of everyone in the team. So we are especially pleased to see him put pen to paper and commit to the club for the coming seasons."
