Dayot Upamecano. The centre-back joined RB Leipzig at just 18 years of age and has enjoyed outstanding development in his four-and-a-half years at the club, which exemplifies our way of finding young talents and consistently helping them reach a top level.
From the upcoming 2021/22 season, Upa will wear the colours of defending German champions FC Bayern Munich. But before the now 22-year-old begins this new chapter, we looked back on a few moments with Dayot and chatted about his time with the Leipzig Bulls.
Thank you for the four-and-a-half years together in Leipzig.
We wish you all the best in Munich!
After four-and-a-half successful years, you're leaving RB Leipzig. What do you remember most from your time here?
There are many things that will remain in my heart because I experienced many wonderful moments - both with the players and with the club. Leipzig will always have a place in my heart. I am very happy to have been part of this team.
Which sporting highlight during your time at RB Leipzig do you remember particularly fondly?
There are many. Firstly, my debut for Leipzig, in front of the fans. Also my first appearance in the Champions League against Monaco. These are moments that I will never forget.
Looking back, how would you describe the feeling when you first came to the Red Bull Arena as an 18-year-old?
I was young, but a lot of people helped me. Today I want to thank them. They were unforgettable moments. We also had an incredible team. I would like to thank all my teammates and all the people at the club.
You joined Leipzig at the age of 18. At 22, how do you look back now at your personal, character development during your time at the club?
This step was very important for me. It's also fair to say that a lot of players helped me, like Marvin Compper and Naby Keïta. That made me stronger mentally.
Fundamentally, you're someone who laughs a lot and emits good vibes. Together with your French teammates, you're affectionately known as the "French Connection" here in Leipzig. How much will you miss your mates?
I'm always in a positive mood. However, I will miss the people here because I had a great time with all of them. Therefore, it's hard for me to leave Leipzig. But I'm staying in the Bundesliga; we'll be able to meet more often.
What do you think RB Leipzig can do in the future in a footballing sense?
RB Leipzig will always be up there, because that simply fits with the way the club is. I wish the club all the best. I'm certain that they will remain among the best in the league.
Do you have a message for the RBL fans?
I want to say thank you to them. They have helped me a lot, also in difficult times. In the stadium, even when we lost, they always supported the club. I will always be grateful to them for that.
