"A big step towards the next round!"

Diego Demme, Marcel Sabitzer, Péter Gulácsi and Julian Nagelsmann share their thoughts on the 2-0 win at Zenit St. Petersburg

Diego Demme:

  • "I'm obviously delighted with my goal. But what's more important is that we won the game and took a big step towards getting through to the next round. The timing of the goal just before half time was ideal and gave us more momentum."

Marcel Sabitzer

  •  "It's obviously a great feeling both to score and to win. The team did really well. We were up against a side that sat deep but we found good ways through and deserved to win. It's an intense season but we recover well and it's fun when you're in the kind of form we are.
We didn't let much through at our end and we were strong throughout the match. We can be very happy with 9 points from 4 games. It's about time that Diego scored again. He's no spring chicken anymore."

Péter Gulácsi:

  • "We kept Zenit under control, were patient and scored an important goal just before the break. Overall, it must be said that we dominated during both halves and barely allowed our opponents any chances.

As a result, it was a deserved win on the road. The key to victory for us was that we put our opponents under pressure and didn't allow Zenit much room."

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "It was quite surprising that Zenit sat so deep and tried to play on the break. We defended against it well, though. Credit to Dayot Upamecano and Lukas Klostermann for their performances at the back today.
It was great to see how we outplayed Zenit. We dominated the game and deserved the three points. We have at least one more step to go but we want to win both our remaining games!"
