"We deserved to be favourites"

The thoughts of Julian Nagelsmann, Marcel Sabitzer and Marcel Halstenberg after the 4-0 victory away at Union Berlin

Julian Nagelsmann:

  • "We have now played two big away games with intimidating atmospheres - that's not easy. But we have shown we deserved to be favourites. My guys really moved up a gear compared to the DFB-Pokal match and reacted to the opposition really well in certain situations. We wanted to vary our play both on and off the ball. We had a good mixture of possession and pressing.
  • In the first half we were comfortably in charge of the game but we played well overall too and that's always important."

Marcel Sabitzer:

  • "We stuck to the gameplan and were confident in front of goal. We did that well. We have a lot of potential with some very good players on the bench as well. It was a great game. It was also important for Pete to keep a clean sheet. Let's hope we can continue like this.

I like how the coach lets us play and I wanted to pay him back on the pitch. It has worked well for us twice now, which is great.

Last season, I struggled a little in front of goal - not any more. I've worked hard in training and now it's paying off."

Marcel Halstenberg:

  • "Of course, to win 4-0 is a great feeling. We had opportunities to score even more goals - like with my big chance at the end. But it would have been hard to top two goals and an assist on the first matchday.

"We carried out on the pitch what we had prepared in training. It's a great confidence boost to start the season like this"
