Back to winning ways! The Bulls ran out 2-1 winners against Zenit St.Petersburg on Champions League matchday three in front of 41,058 fans in the Red Bull Arena. A fantastic second half display leaves RBL top of Group G for the time being and with a good chance of making it through to the next round.
Leipzig started brightly and Konrad Laimer almost opened the scoring after 50 seconds with a thunderbolt from range but his effort was tipped onto the crossbar. The Bulls had more possession but Zenit's focus on quick counter attacks soon paid off and Yaroslav Rakitskiy opened the scoring with a powerful strike from around 25 metres out (25'). The score remained 1-0 to Zenit until half time as RBL failed to make use of a few promising opportunities, inlcuding a ball across the box from Klostermann that Timo Werner could only turn towards the keeper.
Konrad Laimer put an end to the waste shortly after half time as he nicely tucked away a delightful pass from Marcel Sabitzer to make it 1-1 (49'). 10 minutes later, the provider became the scorer. The ball came out to Sabitzer on the edge of the box, on the half volley, and he curled it perfectly right into the top left corner of the net for one of the best goals of the season (59'). Substitute Matheus Cunha had two chances to put the game to bed in quick succession, but fired wide with the first and high with the second (83'). A third goal was not needed in the end as Leipzig held on for the victory without too much trouble.
