Dani Olmo at the double! The match started at a franctic pace under the lights in Sinsheim. After VAR overturned an early penalty for Hoffenheim, Leipzig went straight up the other end and scored.
A poor start for Leipzig. After a foul on Munas Dabbur by Péter Gulácsi, the home side were awarded an early penalty by the onfield referee (4'). But the Hungarian's blushes were spared by VAR, who spotted a handball in the build-up. The Bulls wasted no time and ruthlessly took the lead just minutes later through Dani Olmo (9'). Three minutes later, Olmo grabbed his and Leipzig's second with a composed near-post finish (11'). But TSG remained tough opponents and made life difficult for Leipzig. Dabbur hit the crossbar (25') and Gulácsi denied Baumgartner (23'). Just before half time, Timo Werner missed a one-on-one in front of Oliver Baumann (44').
Hoffenheim remained dangerous after the break, but again Gulácsi stood strong and denied the home side (52'). The offside flag denied Leipzig a third, much to Angelino's annoyance (53'). Nordi Mukiele was also unfortunate not to score (59') and Oliver Baumann denied Olmo a hattrick (65'). Leipzig let Hoffenheim have far too many chances to get back in it, but fortunately the home side were wasteful in front of goal. Nkunku almost scored a spectacular goal late on, but the Frenchman's long-range strike hit the post. All in all, it was a tough game for Leipzig against a physical Hoffenheim side, but the Bulls come away with three very important points.
