Leipzig started well, and quickly gained control of the match. The Bulls were on the front foot from the off and chances weren't hard to come by. Nkunku forced SCF keeper Alexander Schwolow into a save (9') early on. But Freiburg recovered from an early onslaught, and took the lead through Manuel Gulde (34'). The guests went close to doubling their lead as Christian Guenter's shot slid past the post (44').
Leipzig made one change at the break; Nagelsmann sent on young Englishman Ademola Lookman in place of defender Nordi Mukiele. The substitute missed a guilt edge chance (56'), however; a theme of Leipzig's afternoon. Schwolow denied Timo Werner (72'), and Yussuf Poulsen headed wide just a minute later. But Leipzig's number nine redeemed himself. Kevin Kampl's deep cross was met well by the Dane, whose looping header nestled in the back of the net (77'). Neither side could find a winner, though Freiburg came closest. The Breisgau club had a goal ruled out for offside in the dying moments of a difficult afternoon for the Bulls.
