Tyler Adams is Hungry4More! Our midfielder is back in his home country recharging his batteries ahead of the upcoming Champions League tournament. Before he headed back to the States, we spoke to him about Leipzig, Europe and the US national side.
Hi Tyler, good to see you. A long season is finally over. What are you going to do now?
I'm excited to head home and see my family. With everything that's been going on, travelling hasn't been very easy, but luckily I'm able to go back and see them.
Hopefully you'll get a good rest. What's been the most difficult time in your career so far?
When I first came here I had a good run of games. Then I got injured, we had a new coach and new players, so it was a tough situation. It feels good to be fully fit again.
What has been your greatest moment so far?
Making my debut in a Leipzig jersey was a big moment for me.
You fulfilled one of your dreams by playing in the Champions League against Tottenham. How hungry are you for more?
I'm very hungry for more. I got a taste of what it's like to play in the Champions League, so I can't wait to play more games in it after the break.
How far can we go in Lisbon?
I think it's a good opportunity for us. The way the format is set up levels the playing field completely. No team would want to draw us because we can be a problem in a one-game match.
Would you like to face Mbappé?
Yeah, absolutely. I played against him with my national team, but I would be excited to face him again.
You made the move from New York to Leipzig a year and a half ago. Do you miss home sometimes?
Of course you always miss home. I miss my family and the restaurants around New York, but technology nowadays means it's easy to stay in contact with your friends around the world.
What's something you particularly miss about the States?
I miss the food a lot, especially my mother's home-cooked meals.
What's something you miss about New York?
My friends and family.
What do you like most about Leipzig?
How slow placed the city is. It's not like New York, where things are happening 24/7. There's not as much traffic and you can get around very easily, which I like.
Which US national team player would you like to see play for Leipzig next season?
That's a good question. We have so many good young, talented players. I would say a player like Timothy Weah. He played for PSG and now he's at Lille. He's a top player.
A good friend of yours?
Yeah, we grew up in New York together, he played for New York Red Bull Academy as well, so he has some Red Bull ties too.
Final question. Who's the greatest midfielder of all time and why will it be Tyler Adams one day?
Erm, the best midfielder of all time? There are so many to choose from, but I'd have to to say Zinédine Zidane. I loved the way that he played.
He's one of your idols, but one day...?
He's one of my idols, but I wouldn't say I replicate my game off of him. I'm more of an N’Golo Kanté esque player, but I would say that Zinédine Zidane is one of my role models.
Thank you, Tyler and enjoy the summer break.
