The Champions League tournament is just around the corner! Julian Nagelsmann spoke to journalists in a virtual press confernce on Saturday afternoon before the squad departed for Portugal. He discussed the opponents, the preparations for the tournament and Emil Forsberg's role.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann on...
... preparing to face Atletico Madrid:
- "Our preparations for the Champions League are going well. I have been happy with all of our training sessions and the lads have given their all. The sessions in Lisbon won't be about tactical things, but rather to keep us fresh in order to go into the game with enough power! We want to be prepared to play 90 minutes plus potentially extra time against Atletico on Thursday. The squad hasn't had such a heavy workload since the break and you can't simulate this with such little preparation time. We've already seen that the teams that have already played in the Champions League games this week weren't at 100% - it would be strange if they were."
- "We are obviously trying to prepare for any possible event in the game. We will almost definitely have to be patient against Atletico. They are brilliant at the back, are confident on the ball and are extremely dangerous on the break. They attack at a high tempo and often create an overload in the opponent's box. We need to be wary of that and try to avoid conceding and simply stay patient. We need to find a way of avoiding counter attacks, but also being dangerous ourselves - a 1-0 win for us would be enough in the end!"
... Emil Forsberg's role:
- "Emil is looking really, really good. Overall, our attacking midfielders have continued where they let off from the final few Bundesliga games. Emil is both mentally and physically strong. He is currently enjoying his football, which I obviously like. Even though I haven't decided my team for Thursday, and I always treat each match the same, I think Emil is predestined for Thurday's game."
