Kevin Kampl is an important cog in our midfield. After the first training session in preparation for our Champions League quarterfinal, the playmaker answered the media’s questions in a virtual press conference. Topics included the team’s set-up in Estoril and the motivation of the team to progress.

Kevin Kampl on ...

... the set-up in Lisbon:

  • ·         "The set-up is actually really good. We have a great hotel where can prepare perfectly for the quarterfinal against Atlético away from the training sessions and team discussions. It’s also possible to find some peace and quiet when needed. What’s more is that it’s not far from the stadium or the training ground. The conditions here are perfect for us to be as well-prepared as possible heading into the match on Thursday.”

... the style of both teams:

  • ·         "Atlético Madrid have been one of the best teams in Europe for years now. They have a wealth of experience and have already reached the Champions League final in previous seasons. Even if they haven’t managed to lift the trophy it still shows that they have a quality team. We are aware of this. We also know that they defend very well and pose a huge threat on the counterattack - they know how to make the most of possession when they have the ball. They earn a lot of 1-0 wins with the mindset that they have. We have prepared ourselves for this.

But we also have a great squad and have just as much quality as Atlético. We always pose an attacking threat, regardless of who plays or which formation we use. Everyone is well aware of this opportunity that we have. Everyone is going to fight for victory so that we can progress to the semifinals. There isn’t really a clear favourite for Thursday’s match!"

... the meaning of this Champions League tournament:

  • "For a football player, the nicest thing is to be able to compete with the best during your career. That’s what makes the Champions League so special. It would be an insane, historic achievement to win this competition, not just for me personally but also for the club, the fans, and the city of Leipzig. We are only two wins away from the chance to play in the final of the biggest competition in club football, we all know that. We will give everything to be able to stay in Lisbon a little while longer! Obviously it’s a shame that the matches have to go ahead in empty stadiums. But we are perfectly well-prepared for the match and our opponents also have to deal with the strange atmosphere.”

... a reunion with Jan Oblak:

  • "I obviously know Jan from my time with the Slovenia national team. He is an outstanding keeper and is amongst the best in the world in my opinion. He has already achieved a lot in his career but he still has the potential to get even better. We get in touch every now and then. We exchanged a few messages before the journey out and I am looking forward to seeing him out on the pitch on Thursday.”
