Die Roten Bullen lost 4-1 to FC Zürich in their opening friendly of the 2019/20 season. Julian Nagelsmann stood on the Leipzig touchline for the first time, handing Luan Candido his debut.

Both teams started at a high tempo, but it was the guests that took the lead in the 13th minute when Benjamin Kolollo fired home. Assan Ceesay and Simon Sohm made it 3-0 for the visitors before half-time, with Izer Aliu adding a fourth after the break. Emil Forsberg got a late consolation from the spot for the hosts, with the game ending 4-1.
