We are semi-finalists! RB Leipzig defeated top Spanish side Atlético Madrid 2-1 in a thrilling quarterfinal match on the way to advancing to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Bulls will now face Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening (21:00 CEST).
RB Leipzig started strong and dictated the game early on. Despite having 60% possession during much of the first half, RBL lacked composure in front of goal. With the exception of a header from Dayot Upamecano (45 + 3'), the Bulls failed to really threaten during the first 45. Atlético defended well and were also able to pose a threat up front, with Yannick Carrasco coming close to netting the opener in the 13th minute - only a quick save from Péter Gulácsi kept the score level.
Leipzig saw their earlier efforts rewarded shortly after the break. Following a stellar pass from Konrad Laimer to Marcel Sabitzer, the Austrian was able to find Dani Olmo, who headed home the opener (50'). Atlético then made adjustments to their formation and went on the attack. João Félix was brought down in the box and won the penalty, which he then converted to bring things level once again (71').
RB Leipzig continued to press in search of another goal. In the 88th minute, Tyler Adams' shot was deflected on its way in as we retook a late lead. Through the closing minutes and the nearly eight (!) minutes of added time, the Bulls held on to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the competition for the very first time.
Simply unbelievable.
What a win! What a performance!
