Tillykke med fødselsdagen, Yussi! We wish our record appearance maker Yussuf Poulsen a happy 26th birthday. We've now celebrated six birthdays together with him; here's a look at some unforgettable moments we've experienced together.
Where it all began:
It has now been almost seven years since Yussuf Poulsen signed his contract at RB Leipzig and became a Red Bull on 4th July 2013; back in the 3. Liga at the time.
Before that he spent five years playing as a striker for Danish second division side Lyngby BK, scoring eleven goals in 29 appearances in his last season at the club. The 19-year-old at the time already had previous experience playing for the Denmark youth national team: he took part in the 2011 U17 EUROs in Serbia and the U17 World Cup in Mexico. He had also recently made 12 appearances for the U19 team.
Yussi's first season – Saison 2013/14:
A long time to settle in? Not for Yussuf Poulsen. The youngster hit the ground running at Leipzig with a fantastic first season at the club, starting 35 out of 38 games. In his fifth game, Poulsen scored both his first and second goals for the club against Rot-Weiß Erfur. His ten goals and stellar peformances played a key role in securing promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.
First season in the Bundesliga2. 2014/15:
One for the RBL history books: 10th August 2014. We traveled to face 1860 Munich. Our first ever away game in the second division, and our first ever goal in Germany's second league. And who scored it? You're right. Yussuf Poulsen.
The striker latched onto Dominik Kaiser's assist and kept his composure to finish past the opposition goalkeeper.
He also went on to score his first ever goal in the DFB-Pokal in a second round tie against Erzebirge Aue.
Mission Bundesliga promotion 2015/16:
But not without Yussi! He featured in every single match in the season we secured Bundesliga promotion, notching up twelve goal involvements.
His brace against second in the league MSV Duisburg and his assist against third placed 1. FC Nürnberg were particularly important.
Debut Bundesliga season 2016/17:
Our favourite Dane stayed with the club as we marched on into the Bundesliga for our first ever season in the top flight. The striker netted his first ever Bundesliga goal on Matchday six with an ice-cold second half finish against FC Augsburg. His statistics that season: 29 appearances, five goals and nine assists.
Five-year RBL anniversary 2017/18:
We still get goosebumps to this day. After finishing second in the league in the previous season, we qualified for the Champions League for the first ever time in the 2017/18 season. Yussuf turned provider to assist our first ever goal in the Champions League against AS Monaco. The Dane played through Emil Forsberg, who calmly slotted home our first ever goal in the competition.
Despite suffering an early exit from the UCL and dropping into the Europa League, Yussi didn't let his performance level drop and netted our first ever Europa League goal against Napoli.
There was another unforgettable moment from this season: a 5-0 win over Dorfmerkingen in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The Dane set up a staggering four goals that afternoon, as well as scoring one himself from the spot.
Contract extension in 2018/19:
Our striker enjoyed his best ever season to date back in 2018/19. He missed just seven of our 51 matches that season, scoring a total of 17 goals and providing eight assists. A particular highlight: he scored his first ever Europa League goal in the group stages. An 82nd minute header equalled the scores in a 2-2 draw agains RB Salzburg.
The best news of the season: shortly before taking part in our first ever final of the DFB-Pokal, he signed a contract extension until 2022.
Die schönste Nachricht der Saison: Kurz vor unserem erstmaligen Einzug ins DFB-Pokalfinale verlängerte er seinen Vertrag bei RB Leipzig bis 2022. A cup final was just another memory added to the long list.
The current season 2019/20:
Yussi became our record appearance maker in the 5-0 win against Mainz 05 in May 2020, with 250 competitive appearances. He's made 32 appearances this season alone: 22 in the Bundesliga, three in the DFB-Pokal and six in the Champions League.
Unfortunately the striker suffered a ligament injury in his ankle during the game against Mainz and will be out of action until further notice.
Nevertheless, Yussi will come back stronger!
