RBL were forced to settle for a 1-0 defeat away at FC Salzburg in the Europa League. The loss, coupled with Celtic’s win against Rosenborg, means that Die Roten Bullen’s fate is no longer in their own hands. Salzburg, meanwhile, have qualified top of the group and are through to the next round.
Salzburg flew out of the blocks in the first half and put RBL under extreme pressure in the opening 25 minutes. Such a press allowed Leipzig little space to break out of their own half and find a way into the game. Salzburg eventually tired towards the end of the first half, allowing Die Roten Bullen to find their feet a bit. Their best chance fell to Timo Werner on the stroke of half time, but his shot was just wide of the right-hand post.
The second half started just like the first, with Salzburg on top. The Austrian side’s pressure eventually paid off as they took the lead in the 74th minute through Fredrik Gulbrandsen’s ice-cold finish. RBL pushed on to try and find an equaliser, but rarely threatened, barring a late half-volley from Werner that forced a good save from the Salzburg goalkeeper. The full time whistle guaranteed Salzburg’s place in the round of 16, while RBL must hope results go their way in the final matchday if they are to go through.
