RBL claimed their fifth win in a row in all competitions as they beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in the Red Bull Arena.
The game started on level terms, with both teams looking to probe and find space. Leipzig had the first shot of the match, but Emil Forsberg’s effort was comfortably saved by Wolfsburg custodian Pavao Pervan. Leipzig’s next attempt was more successful. Nordi Mukiele layed the ball off to Kevin Kampl, who beat his marker to find space and curl an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. RBL had the momentum and doubled their lead just minutes later. A brilliant inch-perfect cross from Marcel Sabitzer was headed in by Timo Werner, the Leipzig frontman taking his tally to 14 for the season. Despite Wolfsburg finishing the first half on the front foot, it was Die Roten Bullen who went into the break with the lead.
Both teams picked up where they left off as the second 45 minutes began. Werner had the ball in the Wolfsburg net just seconds after the restart, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Leipzig goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi was also in action at the other end of the pitch, keeping out Daniel Ginczek’s low drive towards goal. But it was the Die Roten Bullen who remained on top. Matheus Cunha and Marcel Halstenberg both had chances, before Timo Werner forced the best save of the match from Pervan. Shimmying his way through the Wolfsburg defence, the number nine fired off an explosive shot towards the top left-hand corner, but an incredible reflex save from Pervan somehow kept the ball out. Despite Wolfsburg pushing for a goal towards the end of the match, Die Roten Bullen held on and saw the game out, claiming another three points on their way towards Champions League football next season.
