The first half proved to be a cagey 45 minutes of football, with neither side imposing themselves on the game. Despite a dearth of chances for either side, the hosts managed to take the lead within 20 minutes when Timo Werner made a clever turn in the box and rifled home. The rest of the half proved to be a quiet affair, with Freiburg looking to probe but the Leipzig defence standing resolute.

The second half started in the same vein, with plenty of aggression on show on the pitch. The game was at boiling point when Freiburg equalised from a freekick in controversial circumstances. While custodian Péter Gulácsi organised his wall, Vincenzo Grifo fired home into the empty net. Despite this setback, Die Roten Bullen showed greatmental strength to force their way back into the match. Emil Forsberg scored from the spot after a Freiburg handball to secure a 2-1 win and three points for RBL.
