The game started at a fast pace, with the hosts probing at the Leipzig defence as they looked to create chances. Leipzig stood strong however, and took the lead through an unlikely goalscorer in defender Lukas Klostermann. Winning possession in his own half, the full-back countered with striker Timo Werner, the 23-year-old squaring unselfishly to Klostermann to score. The RBL defender doubled his tally just 12 minutes later, scoring a deft flick from Werner’s delivery to put the visitors in control. The hosts still pressed however, and were deservedly rewarded for their efforts on the stroke of half-time, as Karim Onisiwo poked home to make it 2-1.
Leipzig started the second half on top, and immediately showed their dominance with an early strike. Timo Werner turned from provider to scorer, finding space in the Mainz penalty area to squeeze the ball into the corner of the net. Despite having a 3-1 lead, Die Roten Bullen failed to dig in and see the game out, allowing Mainz to equalize in the 67th and 83rd minutes through Moussa Niakhaté and JP Mateta. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, and although the game will feel like two lost points to RBL, they continue their unbeaten streak in all competitions, now 14 matches undefeated.
