RB Leipzig suffer 3-0 friendly defeat to Huddersfield Town

Mvogo, Werner and Poulsen feature for the first time since World Cup | A more match fit Huddersfield score early on and twice in the second half | Team return home from Seefeld on Saturday.

Die Roten Bullen suffered the first defeat of pre-season on Friday evening. In the penultimate date of the summer training camp, the boys went down 3-0 to Premier League outfit Huddersfield Town.

The match initially lacked tempo and notable chances, as Huddersfield sat deep and looked to hit the team on the counter. Indeed, that’s exactly how the English side scored, when forward Steve Mounié latched on to a cross to head in at the far post in the tenth minute. The goal handed the initiative the Huddersfield, who followed up with several big chances – Tom Smith volleying just over and Gulácsi saving well to deny Mounié his second. At the other end, Kevin Kampl’s long-distance effort represented the best chance for RBL.

Yvon Mvogo replaced Gulácsi between the sticks at half time and made an instant impact, pulling off two stunning saves to deny Alex Pritchard. But Mvogo was helpless to deny Huddersfield a second goal through Adama Diakhaby on the hour mark.

The heavy workload of the last few days continued to take its toll in the 67th minute when Philip Billing made it 3-0 for the Terriers. Youngsters Fabice Hartman and Noah Holm each had chances for a consolation goal, but were denied by the resilient Jonas Lössl.

Ralf Rangnick:

"The game should take place under different circumstances, because we wanted to play with our complete first team today. That wasn't possible because of many injuries. A training session would have done us more good, but we got through the game out of necessity.

We still have a lot of work ahead of us, particulary in physical terms. There are big differences between the players. But the general attitude is good and now it's our job to get all player, including those with injuries, into the best possible shap with some individual training."

Marcel Sabitzer celebrated his return to action, as captain.
Stefan Ilsanker played at centre back in a 4-4-2 formation.
