Expedition Europa continues! Die Roten Bullen are into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League after drawing 1-1 away to Zenit St. Petersberg in Thursday's second leg. Jean-Kévin Augustin's first-half strike was cancelled out on the stroke of half time by Druissi, but RBL were able to keep their Russian counterparts at bay in the second 45 to ensure a 3-2 aggregate win.
There were plenty of nervy moments after the change of ends though, as Zenit pushed hard for a goal that would sent the tie into extra time. Timo Werner had the chance to kill the game off from the penalty spot in the 81st minute, but was denied by Lunev. Bruma also had a chance to strike at the death and ease the tension, and while he too was kept out by the hosts' keeper, the final whistle soon went to confirm Die Roten Bullen's place in the final 8.
The Europa League quarterfinal draw will take place on Friday, 16th March from 13:00 CET at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
- Ralph Hasenhüttl made four changes to the side that started against Stuttgart. Dayot Upamecano, Emil Forsberg, Bruma and Jean-Kévin Augustin all returned, with Ibrahima Konaté, Marcel Sabitzer (back problems), Ademola Lookman (ineligable) and Yussuf Poulsen missing out.
- Jean-Kévin Augustin scored his first goal in the UEFA Europa League.
