Die Roten Bullen came out 2-1 victors in an intense, end-to-end match against Köln. Playing in front of 48,700 fans, of which 850 were RBL supporters, the two teams provided a spectacle of attacking football with 40 shots for both sides. The victory means Leipzig move up to fourth in the Bundesliga table after recording their fourth win of the season.
Lukas Klostermann opened the scoring after 30 minutes of play, driving the ball through the legs of the otherwise excellent Timo Horn from a Sabitzer pass to notch his first ever Bundesliga goal. RBL went into the break a goal to the good after both sides wasted good opportunities to increase the goal tally.
Leipzig and Köln picked up where they had left off at the beginning of the second half but it took until the 80th minutes for there to be another goal. This time Yussuf Poulsen, who'd had a couple of good chances, did brilliantly to get onto Marcel Sabitzer's cross, glancing the ball into the right corner for his first goal of the season. That looked to have sealed the game but Köln made sure the last few minutes were a real battle after Yuya Osako pulled one back for the hosts. It wasn't to be for Peter Stöger's side though, and RBL hung on to secure the win.
Personnel:
Youngster Ibrahima Konaté marked his first Bundesliga start. The 18-year old lined up alongside Upamecano in central defence. Lukas Klostermann, Bruma and Yussuf Poulsen also came in after the Champions League match in Istanbul.
Timo Werner missed the trip to Köln with a neck injury. It is unclear whether the German striker will join the national side for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Naby Keita meanwhile, completed his suspension. He will now be eligible to play in the Bundesliga.
