An enthralling encounter in Leipzig ended with the points shared after Borussia Mönchengladbach came back to equalise in the second half. Head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl made five changes to the team that drew against Monaco in the Champions League, Naby Keita, Bernardo, Konrad Laimer, Jean-Kévin Augustin and Kevin Kampl coming in for Yussuf Poulsen and Diego Demme, who started on the bench; Marcel Halstenbeg, Marcel Sabitzer and Willi Orban weren’t in the matchday squad. Red Bull Leipzig are now unbeaten in four competitive matches after scoring their seventh and eighth goals of the season in front of a sold out stadium.
Leipzig dominated the first half and took the lead through Werner – who else – after 17 minutes. The Red Bulls’ number 11 got onto the end of a drilled Bernardo cross to sidefoot past Sommer in the Gladbach goal. Just as it looked like Leipzig might get another however, Borussia hit back after winning a spot-kick. Bernardo was penalised for a foul on Hofmann and Hazard made no mistake from the spot. RBL showed no signs of giving up though, and quickly struck again. Only six minutes later in fact, as Jean-Kévin Augustin turned delightfully from a Keita through-ball before slotting past the goalkeeper cool as you like. The first half ended 2-1 Leipzig.
Emil Forsberg missed the Red Bulls’ best chance in the second half, opting to cut in instead of shoot when in a good position in the Borussia box. Werner also had an opportunity to wrap things up but blasted straight at the keeper from a tight angle. Leipzig were punished for not making the most of these chances and Lars Stindl equalised from distance with an hour gone. Gladbach grew in confidence after that and were on the hunt for a winner after the Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men, following Naby Keita’s straight red for a high tackle. In the end, a draw was a fair result in a game that will be remembered for a few brilliant goals.
