Red Bull Leipzig take a point from a hard-fought draw away to Leverkusen. Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg scored a penalty apiece, while Bailey and Volland notched for Leverkusen. Ralph Hasenhüttl made five changes for the game. In came Bernardo, captain Willi Orban, Emil Forsberg, Naby Keita and Kevin Kampl.
The opening stages of the game were fought in the middle of the park with few chances. When Marcel Sabitzer was taken down by Mehmedi for the penalty, it was the first real goal-scoring opportunity. Timo Werner assumed penalty duties, emphatically dispatching the spot-kick to get his 30th goal for the club. That was after 12 minutes. Leverkusen grew into the game though, and Brandt missed a big opportunity after being played in by Wendell. Bailey made no mistake only a few minutes later, poking the ball past Gulasci. The score at hallf-time was 1-1
Leverkusen picked off where they'd left off at the start of the second half, but the hosts were then suddenly reduced to ten men. Heinrichs was shown a straight red after blocking a shot with his arm. Double blow for Leverkusen when Forsberg rolled in the subsequent penalty. The goal means Forsberg has now scored in every competition this season. Bayer continued to press despite being a man down and Kevin Voland volleyed in from inside the box to equalise with 15 minutes remaining. Both sides continued to press up until the dying moments, but it wasn't to be for either team and a draw was a fair reflection of the game.
