“A fantastic, action-packed game”

Ralph Hasenhüttl, Péter Gulácsi, Willi Orban, Diego Demme and Kevin Kampl give their thoughts on the 2-2 draw in Leverkusen

Ralph Hasenhüttl:

“We saw a fantastic, action-packed game of football today with lots of chances. The result shows how evenly matched the teams were today.
I thought we could have won today and we should have scored again after they went a man down, so a draw is tough to accept for me. We could see that we were missing something from our build-up play.

We didn’t take a few counterattacking opportunities as well as we should have and we were a bit too hesitant at a few other times because Leverkusen were so strong in attack, even with ten men. At the end of the day, the draw is a fair result against a side who showed great strength of character today.”

 Péter Gulácsi:

“All things considered, a draw is a fair result, but if you play against ten men for 35 or 40 minutes and let them take the lead, then it’s two points lost.

Now we have to switch to Champions League mode as quickly as possible. The Leverkusen game was good preparation for that and to get us back into a rhythm. The away game against Monaco is extremely important for us because we need a win to stay in the competition.”

Willi Orban:

“I’m not happy with a point after what happened in the game. We didn’t use our possession well enough after they had a player sent off and that’s something we have to work on. When you have an extra man on the pitch, you have to be dominating the game.

We were lacking creativity today. The win was there for us today, so it’s frustrating.”

 Diego Demme:

“We knew that Leverkusen would put in a strong performance and they put us under pressure, even when they were a man down. We weren’t consistent enough in our counterattacks and we have to take the point.

You expect to do a bit more when you have the extra man, but Bayer played well and we weren’t really. Our opponents put us under pressure along the wings with their strength and pace and caused us problems.”

Kevin Kampl:

“I’m quite disappointed with the result. There was more in this match for us and we took the lead twice. Leverkusen improved greatly after they went 2-1 down, while we lost our way a bit and were too hectic and unfocused. A team like Leverkusen will pounce on that and take advantage, of course.

Bayer then got the equaliser, which was fully deserved. We had to think on our feet more and we should have tried harder to extend a lead with a third goal. It’s a bitter loss for us, but we’ll take the point.”
