“We didn’t do what we’ve been excellent at for so long”

Ralph Hasenhüttl, Péter Gulácsi, Lukas Klostermann and Willi Orban analyse the last home game of the year against Hertha BSC.

Ralph Hasenhüttl:

"Hertha deserved to win. We didn’t do what we’ve been excellent at for so long. We were missing that final touch on the pitch to win the game with an extra man on the pitch. We were finally drained after the many exhausting matches in the last few weeks.
We tried to turn this game around through our strong power of will, but we simply woke up too late today and that’s why we came away with nothing today. We wanted to give our home fans one more win to celebrate to wrap up a fantastic year, but it didn’t happen, unfortunately.
Nevertheless, we’re in a great starting position for the second half of the season. All the teams at the top of the table with us will have to play us in the Red Bull Arena. But we’ll have to play better than we did against Berlin."

Péter Gulácsi:

"Today is a day to forget for us. We started really well, then conceded quickly and lost our way a bit. We knew that Hertha would be very defensive when they went a man down and we’d have to attack.
We conceded another goal from a set piece and that’s really frustrating. Of course we’re still recovering from the hectic schedule in the last few weeks, but that isn’t an excuse. We have to work hard over the winter break."

Lukas Klostermann:

"When you play so much of the match with an extra man, you have to make more of it than we did today. We conceded too easily and we didn’t have the right ideas in attack.

We didn’t deserve to take the three points with a performance like that. Of course, it doesn’t feel good to go into the break after losing, but we’ll use the time well to make sure we’re fresh and at our best to face Schalke in the New Year."

Willi Orban:

"For sure, we would’ve liked to end the year with a win and gifted our fans a victory, but we weren’t fresh enough mentally, so the break is coming at just the right time for us.
Regardless, we’ve had a great first half of the season and a fantastic 2017 behind us. I’d like to say a huge thank you to our fans for their never-ending and amazing support."
