2-1 loss in the first away game of 2018 in Freiburg. It was a battle of attrition against a defensive Freiburg side and it was two set-pieces which cost Die Roten Bullen the win once again today. Timo Werner fired Leipzig into the lead (65’) but it took Freiburg just 11 minutes to turn the game around through Jannik Haberer (72’) and Robin Koch (76’). They held on to earn a 2-1 victory.
Die Roten Bullen came up against a strong Freiburg defence in the first half and struggled to break down or get in behind the defence. The hosts didn’t allow Leipzig much space and so clear-cut chances were rare. It was goalless at the end of the first half with just 13 shots having been taken.
Leipzig came out after the break all guns blazing and were more direct in attack. Timo Werner gave RBL the lead in the 65th minute after being played in by Marcel Sabitzer. The striker went on a brilliant run and slotted the ball home to make it 1-0. The celebrations were cut short however with Janik Haberer equalising from a corner just seven minutes later. Robin Koch then gave Freiburg the lead, scoring from a set-piece situation once again to make it 2-1.
Head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl made one change from the home game against Schalke 04 – Timo Werner came in for the suspended Naby Keita. Die Roten Bullen changed back to a 4-2-2-2 system with Timo Werner and Jean-Kévin Augustin in attack.
Emil Forsberg (abdomen) and Marcel Halstenberg (hand) missed out with injury once again.
