RBL lose 2-1 to 1. FC Köln

Augustin opens the scoring (5’) | Koziello (70’) and Bittencourt (77’) score after the break | 31.793 fans braved the cold in the Red Bull Arena | Orban fit again, Forsberg back in the starting XI

Two halves, two completely different stories. RB Leipzig lose 2-1 to FC Köln. 31.793 spectators were in the Red Bull Arena despite the biting cold and saw a lively first half performance only for Leipzig to concede two goals in quick succession in the second half.

Hasenhüttl started with an offensive 4-3-3 formation, which immediately paid off as Jean-Kévin Augustin poked a rebound home to fire RB Leipzig into the lead. RB Leipzig then followed this up with a lot of good attacking play but were unable to get that all-important second goal before the break.

In the second half, Köln were much more attacking and had the better of the chances. Vincent Koziello levelled the scoring (70’). Then Leipzig lost their way and quickly conceded a second; Leonardo Bittencourt bagged himself the goal (77’). Then RB Leipzig were denied a penalty with not long to go. The match ended 2-1.

Reaction from Ralph Hasenhüttl:

"Today we chose a very attacking line-up. We did a lot of things right in the first half but didn't secure the game with a second goal. Obviously we are massively disappointed."

"In the Bundesliga it's not good enough to play well for 45 minutes; that was clear today. Now it's important that we learn our lesson from this game and come back stronger."

 Match Highlights

1st minute:

Whistle, kick-off, attack. The 4-3-3 formation chosen by Hasenhüttl looks menacing. Kevin Kampl, Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer are in midfield, with Ademola Lookman, Bruma and Jean-Kévin Augustin forming the attacking trio.

5th minute, GOOAAAALLL FOR LEIPZIG:
Bruma flies forward down the left-hand side, playing the ball to Lookman who shoots only for his effort to hit the post. It was lucky therefore that Augustin gobbled up the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season. 1-0 Leipzig.

9th minute:
Cologne nearly reply straight away. Yuya Osako crosses from the left, Simon Terodde beats Dayot Upamecano for the ball durch. Péter Gulácsi tips his header over the crossbar.

Good attack from Leipzig, nearly making it 2-0! Lukas Klostermann plays it well to Augustin. The striker holds off two defenders and gets his shot away from an acute angle, nine meters out. His shot, however, hits the side netting.

29th minute:
Augustin again! Marcel Sabitzer latches onto a wayward pass from Frederik Sörensen and puts Augustin through perfectly for a 1-on-1 with Cologne’s keeper Timo Horn but he squanders the chance.

31st minute:
Next bit of quality! This time Bruma sets off on the counter and puts in a great cross for Sabitzer but his shot from ten metres out goes the wrong side of the left hand post.

A good performance from Leipzig in the first 45 with 60% possession and the better of the chances. The quick build-up play was very effective but the boys were unable to convert a lot of the chances they had.

Köln have had the better oft he opening exchanges in the second half. Upamecano does well to deflect Terodde’s shot for a corner.

65th minute:
First real good chance after the break. Kampl picks up the ball well in the middle and sends Bruma through. The effort from the forward, however, goes over the bar.

The warning signs were there. Marcel Risse crosses from the right, Kampl heads it straight to the feet of Vincent Koziello, whose effort is too good for Gulácsi and finds its way to the back of the Leipzig net..

77th minute, Köln get their second:
Incredible – Köln go into the lead. Upamecano gives the ball away to Risse, who plays it to the on-running Bittencourt, who shoots from six metres out and gives Gulácsi no chance, 1-2 to the away side.

86th minute:
Big moment at the death! Poulsen steams into the box and is pushed by Meré. The referee, however, doesn’t see it as a penalty.

Köln take  home the three points. Leipzig will rue their missed chances and have to accept the defeat. After the impressive first-half performace, Leipzig lost their way in the second half. Congratulations to Köln, they deserved their victory.
